The Vienna Philharmonic and Philippe Jordan open the 40th International Music Festival with the short orchestral piece »Atmosphères« by György Ligeti, composed in 1961. Based on this key work of New Music, which became widely known not least through its use in the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick’s science fiction film »2001: A Space Odyssey«, the entire festival program explores in a variety of ways different intersections and forms of interaction between music, literature and the performing arts. Of course, Ligeti’s oeuvre plays a major role in this program, but the romantic double talents of E. T. A. Hoffmann and Robert Schumann or the synesthete Alexander Scriabin also play a role.
