Viktoria Tolstoy at Fasching

Crystal clear, dynamic, vibrant, earthy and not always tame, Viktoria Tolstoy is one of the greatest Scandinavian vocalists. When she sings, she doesn’t just interpret a song – she innovates, shapes and makes it her own.

Now she has a new album on ACT Records.

Viktoria’s last album, “Stations” (ACT/Naxos) is about traveling. Both in the mind and physically. The theme is “on the road”, with lyrics that can be associated with the life of touring people. Music by Bonnie Raitt, Nancy Wilson, Billy Joel, and Shirley Horn, among others. And new material by Ida Sand and Joel Lyssarides. Marked blues feeling with jazz drama and spiced with funk. Poignantly beautiful ballads. Music that is like life. Both the dark and the light.

There is an artistic streak in Viktoria Tolstoy’s family. Her maternal grandfather was the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. The young Viktoria dropped like a bomb in Stockholm’s jazz scene with leading musicians such as Svante Thuresson and Putte Wickman.

In 1994, at the age of 20, she made her first record. Two years later, with the album För Älskad, she became Sweden’s biggest pop sensation overnight. She went on to collaborate with Esbjörn Svensson, who produced and wrote the music for White Russian, the first Scandinavian album released on the legendary Blue Note label. At that time, Viktoria also collaborated with Nils Landgren and in 2003 Viktoria joined Nils and Esbjörn as an exclusive artist for ACT Records. Since then, she has established herself internationally as one of the leading voices in contemporary jazz.
