Fans of jazz do not worry! The Stockholm Jazz Festival is here to provide the pleasure of soothing your demand for more groovy evenings! Starting off with beautiful Ledisi, this is a remedy for all autumnal evenings.
Stockholm Jazz Festival pops the champagne corks right away when American jazz and soul star Ledisi opens the festival at Stockholm Concert Hall. On opening night, fourteen-time Grammy-nominated New Orleans-born singer Ledisi sings the legendary Nina Simone’s treasure trove of songs with a full orchestra conducted by Calle Rasmusson. The hand-picked orchestra is unique by Swedish standards and also internationally unusual. It is not a classical large band ensemble or a symphony orchestra but a hybrid of the two. A modern orchestra of 50 musicians with the capacity to deliver cross-genre music in a large, luxurious format.
Nina Simone has played a crucial role in Ledisi’s life and she has constantly returned to Simone’s songs throughout her career.
“I heard her when I was still very young-in Oakland in my twenties. I was depressed, my life was a mess, and I heard her on the radio singing ‘Trouble in Mind.’ … [T]hat song woke me up … Nina’s voice said to me I was not alone.”
In 2021, the album Ledisi sings Simone was released with the big-band symphony orchestra Metropole Orkest. On the album, Ledisi uses the energy of Simone but does The high priestess of soul justice by never imitating, always staying true to her own voice in interpretations of Simone’s songs. The album earned Ledisi her fourteenth Grammy nomination.
In addition to albums and tours under her own name, Ledisi has also been seen in musical contexts on Broadway, in television series and in film contexts where she played gospel queen Mahalia Jackson in the film adaptation of Martin Luther King’s life Selma, among other roles. During Obama’s time in the White House, Ledisi was a frequent guest artist. A few years ago she sang a posthumous duet with Miles Davis in the song Rubberband of Life on the Miles album Rubberband which was originally recorded in 1985-86 but was only released in 2019.
