Some life stories have cinematic qualities. Like Diamond Platnumz. The journey from the slums of Dar es Salaam to becoming both Tanzania’s and one of the entire continent’s most appreciated artists is nothing short of inspiring. Bongo flava, the Tanzanian genre that blends traditional dansi with everything from Afrobeat to reggae, R&B and hip-hop, has been his bedrock. Lately, however, Diamond Platnumz has been expanding his musical horizons. The lyrics, previously sung exclusively in Swahili, are now more often in English and the music is perhaps best described as Afropop. What remains, however, is the sensual suppleness, the soulful swing and the palpable pride in the culture of their homeland.
The fine debut album ‘Kawambie’ came in 2013 but it was with the third, super-acclaimed ‘A Boy From Tandale’ that Diamond Platnumz reached the wider masses. And with songs like ‘African Beauty’, ‘Marry You’ and ‘Nana’, it’s not hard to see why. Now Diamond Platnumz are on a roll with their new album ‘First Of All’, where the single ‘Melody’, sung with Jaywillz, is the flagship track. Don’t miss out when the pride of Tanzania comes to Berns on Saturday 23 July!
