The Russian Rome

The Russian Rome events. 20 years of the 20th century, Italy, Russia and October Revolution. What was it like in Italy after the October Revolution, what was their relationship with the Russians, with Russian culture? What did the so-called Russian Rome look like after the October Revolution? These events will be the main theme of this online conference. The years 1917 to 1922 are a very important period for Russian settlers in Rome. Not only was the city full of Russians, the streets almost smelled like Russian air. This period is also called in history the “flowering of Russian Rome”. In this period in Rome, you may find a Russian library, two Russian taverns, Russian theaters and a Russian tea house, a Russian committee. This Russian civilization fascinates many Italian intellectuals and encourages them to research and raises many questions about what happened in Rome, as it appeared and many others. Rome, also for everyday life, the art it produced, the Russian press (the newspaper La Russia, La Russia Nuova and Slovo publishing house) and various institutions.

This conference will be led by a professor, Bianca Sulpasso, associate professor of Russian language and literature at the University of Tor Vergata. She has lectured abroad, taught in various Italian and foreign universities. She has been involved in research for a long time, whose main topic is the Russian colony in Rome. She has also worked on several publications.
