Let us follow in the footsteps of Caravaggio and his turbulent life, starting from Porta del Popolo, the gate through which in ancient times all visitors or new inhabitants from the North entered Rome. It is very likely, therefore, that Caravaggio also entered the city for the first time through this gate. Right next door is the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo, where inside, in the Cerasi Chapel, are Merisi’s two famous works depicting the Conversion of St. Paul (1601) and the Crucifixion of St. Peter (1600-1601). Next we will move to Via della Lupa, where we will discover together the Osteria della Lupa, a habitually frequented haunt of the artist. A short distance away, on Vicolo del Divino Amore 19, then called Vicolo di San Biagio, we find the small house, still standing, where Caravaggio lived and where he had his studio. Moving on to Piazza di Firenze, in front of the small palace that from 1587 was the seat of the Medici embassy (now the headquarters of the Dante Alighieri Society), we will mention the strong support Caravaggio had from Cardinal Bourbon Del Monte. Via della Pallacorda, on the other hand, is the place made famous by the fatal quarrel between Merisi and Ranuccio Tommasoni in which the latter lost his life, forcing Merisi to flee and exile from Rome. Along Via della Maddalena, on the other hand, was the infamous Osteria del Moro, the scene of a squabble between Merisi and his apprentice Pietro Fusaccia over the seasoning of a dish of artichokes. Between Via della Scrofa and the Pozzo delle Cornacchie, were located a series of stores frequented by Caravaggio: the barber Marco, the saddler, the saddler Sinibaldi, and above all the Sicilian painter Lorenzo Carli, who had his workshop towards S. Agostino since 1593, and with whom the Milanese artist collaborated, to make ends meet, shortly after his arrival in Rome. Piazza Sant’Agostino, on the other hand, is the site of the church of the same name, the main seat of the Augustinians in Rome, inside which, in the chapel of Marquis Cavalletti, Merisi painted La Madonna dei Pellegrini. The church of San Luigi dei Francesi, on the other hand, is the scene of his first major commission in a Roman church, with the creation of the cycle dedicated to the Stories of St. Matthew in the Contarelli Chapel. The adjacent Palazzo Madama, now the seat of the Senate of the Republic, is a very important place for the Milanese master: this building built by the de’ Medici family, in fact, was at the time the residence of Cardinal Bourbon del Monte, his great promoter and patron. Palazzo Giustiniani, on the other side of Via della Dogana Vecchia, on the other hand, belonged to Marquis Vincenzo Giustiniani, a very rich aristocrat and intellectual of Ligurian origin, who was one of the greatest collectors of Merisi’s works. To conclude, Piazza Navona, the city’s main market place, at the time not yet embellished by the interventions of Bernini and Borromini, brings us back to the problematic biographical fact of Caravaggio, and of his repeated involvement in acts of violence.
