In the Prague district of Vysočany, on the border with Libeň, lies Park Podviní – a peaceful natural refuge in the midst of urban development.
Although it covers only four hectares, its thoughtful and varied layout creates the impression of a much larger space.
The park was created in 1997 and 1998 through the revitalization of the original chateau garden, which had long been neglected and overgrown with invasive trees. During its transformation into a modern urban park, rare old trees and original ponds were successfully preserved, and today they form an integral part of the park’s natural character.
The main landmark of the park is a Celtic fort shaped like a lizard’s back. This unconventional element offers a viewpoint over Dragon Lake, as well as tunnels, corridors, and a natural amphitheater with seating made from roughly cut tree trunks. An adventurous path over stepping stones also leads to the lake itself.
An inseparable part of Park Podviní are its water features. The lower part of the park is bordered by the Rokytka stream, into which a smaller brook flows, creating small ponds along the way surrounded by moisture-loving vegetation. The water elements bring not only atmosphere but also natural dynamism to the park.
Park Podviní is a popular place for relaxation, walks, family visits, and smaller cultural events. Its combination of nature, unconventional architectural elements, and peaceful surroundings make it one of the most pleasant spots in Prague 9.
