The Cathedral of Florence, Santa Maria del Fiore

29.05.2020

Although people cannot travel around the world due to the current pandemic situation, there is still the possibility of virtual travel. In this way, we offer a visit to the famous Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore. It’s a unique monument, which is a symbol of the city of Florence. The city that gave the world a renaissance and works of art by masters that still take our breath away. The construction of the church began in 1294, by its first builder and designer Arnoldi di Cambio. A remarkable work of art and architecture is the 114.4 m high dome of the church, which was built without the help of scaffolding by the erupted architect, Filippo Brunelleschi. The famous dome of the Florence Cathedral is still the largest stonework in the world. Part of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is an elegant high bell tower, designed by the famous painter and architect Giotto di Bondone. Andrea Pisano and Francesco Talenti took part in its construction. Unforgettable experiences from Florence include climbing the stairs to the dome of the Cathedral. The spacious cathedral is the fourth largest church in the world and can accommodate 25,000 visitors. On the right wall of the dome, it is worth noting the medallion with Brunelleschi’s bust, on the left Dante’s portrait by Domenico di Michelino. The poet is depicted on it against the background of Florence with the Divine Comedy in his hand.
