La Pietà by Michelangelo, free online event by laboratorio104
The Renaissance master, Michelangelo Buonarroti created several works that influenced the world of Baroque and Mannerism. He excelled in painting, sculpture, architecture, and was also a poet. He reached an exceptional level in each of these disciplines but preferred to devote himself to sculpture. During Michelangelo’s work, attention turned to the figure of a man with his suffering and strength. For centuries Michelangelo was one of the most important sculptors, not only in Italy but of the whole world. Like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo is considered the great master of his art. He created mainly the sculptures, he cut them from marble in a precise way.

One of his most important works is known as Pietà, which place of honor is in the Vatican. Although Michelangelo had a large number of significant works behind him, he only signed one work, a statue made of a large block of light marble representing the corpse of Jesus Christ in the arms of his mother, the Virgin Mary. It is located in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, which was built in the 16th century on the site of the original church which was built in this particular place precisely because St. Peter himself was executed here. The statue depicts Mary sitting on a stone, on whose knees lies the body of Christ, dressed in a suit made exactly of marble, from a single piece, so the author took care of all the details of this statue. The signature can be found on the coat that Mary has on her body and the name can be seen directly from the front. If you are interested in art, this sculpture you should know unequivocally. You can find out more about its history, facts, and details as early as May 6, 2020, in an online conference prepared by the laboratorio104.
