? LA DOLCE VITA (THE SWEET LIFE)
The most famous film shot in Rome is undoubtedly La dolce vita film in 1960 directed by Federico Fellini. Considered one of Fellini’s masterpieces and among the most famous films in the history of cinema, it was a winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Oscar for best costumes. The film features interesting views of the city: the Trevi Fountain, the Don Bosco Basilica, the Tuscolana area in San Pietro and the area from Via Veneto to Piazza del Popolo.

Roman Holiday is a film directed by William Wyler in 1953, starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. The film, which reverses Cinderella’s story, made Hepburn famous, who had previously played secondary roles in various British productions. The film made the Vespa Piaggio famous all over the world. The film was shot mainly in Italy, between Rome and the Royal Palace of Caserta. Numerous glimpses of the city appear in the main sequences of the film, such as the Spanish Steps, the Villa Borghese, St. Peter’s Square and the Pantheon of Agrippa.

The great beauty is a film directed by Paolo Sorrentino in 2013. It won the Oscar for best foreign film, the Golden Globe and BAFTA in the same category, four European Film Awards, nine David di Donatello awards, five Silver Ribbons and numerous other international awards. This film is like an ode to the life of Rome and the Romans, to their parties and to their absolutely particular model of life. In his masterful shots, Paolo Sorrentino manages to portray perfectly some of the most important museums and monuments of the capital, such as Piazza Navona and the Capitoline Museums.

? LADRI DI BICICLETTE (BICYCLE THIEVES)
Bicycle thieves is a film directed, produced and partly written by Vittorio De Sica in 1948. It is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian cinematographic neorealism. Four years after its premiere, it was deemed the greatest film of all time by the British film magazine Sight & Sound. In 1958 was declared the second-best film ever at the Confrontation in Brussels, by an international jury of critics. Made with non-professional actors, it was shot in the capital after the Second World War.

Ben Hur is an adventure, action, dramatic, sentimental film from 1959, directed by William Wyler, starring Charlton Heston and Jack Hawkins. Considered one of the most impressive action films in the history of cinema, it includes among the most well-known scenes that of the mythical race of the quadrigas where the famous Circus Maximus appears in all its grandeur. The film won 11 Academy Awards and David di Donatello award.

? UN AMERICANO A ROMA (AN AMERICAN IN ROME)
An American in Rome is a comedy directed by Steno in 1954 and starring Alberto Sordi. In addition to the comic aspect, the film is a penetrating costume satire of post-war Italy, brilliantly highlighting the heterophile myth of America. The story of the mad Nando Mericoni turns between Portico d’Ottavia and Theater of Marcello, right in the Ghetto of Rome, in addition to the Colosseum.

Umberto D. is a film directed by Vittorio De Sica in 1952, considered by critics to one of the best cinematographic works by De Sica and one of the masterpieces of Neorealism. In the film, Rome is the backdrop to the drama of a former official of the Ministry of Public Works reduced to hunger and his dog. The most famous place in the Eternal City is, of course, the Pantheon.

? CARO DIARIO (DEAR DIARY)
A dear diary is a film written, directed and starring Nanni Moretti in 1993, winner of the prize for best direction at the Cannes Film Festival. This film is made up of three episodes in which Moretti plays himself in a sort of open diary, as the title suggests. Thanks to the first episode which is more famous, in which Moretti riding a wasp goes through the alleys of the city, we can admire wonderful views, especially in the Garbatella district.

Big Deal on Madonna Street is a 1958 film directed by Mario Monicelli, starring Vittorio Gassman and Marcello Mastroianni. Considered one of the masterpieces of Italian cinema, the film is also known as the head of the genre caper movie. He got two silver ribbons and an Oscar nomination for the best foreign film. In the film, we can see the Via Armenia, in the San Giovanni area.
