HAMM: “One day you’ll be blind, like me. You’ll be sitting there, a speck in the void, in the dark, for ever, like me.”
ENDGAME tells the story of Hamm, a blind man who cannot stand; Clov, his servant, who cannot sit; and Nagg and Nell, Hamm’s parents, who have no legs and live in rubbish bins. Contained in a refuge with only one way out, these four players must play what may (or may not) be their last moves. Although there might still be fleas, sharks, and rats in their world, there is no more Turkish Delight. There are no more bicycle wheels, pap, nature, sugarplums, tide, navigators, rugs, pain-killers (spoiler alert), nor coffins. The consolations of life – love, friendship, beauty, order, clarity, simplicity, and mercy – are diminished to a minimum, yet strangely not wholly destroyed.
