Vincent Van Gogh: The deafening smell of white: Alessandro Preziosi at the Vascello Theater welcomes you for an incredible show with a twist!
The austere and washed-out walls of a room in the Saint Paul asylum. How can a great painter live in a place where there is no other color than white? It is 1889 and Vincent’s only desire is to get out of those walls, his first hope lies in the unexpected visit of his brother Theo, who had to take four trains and even a cart to visit him …
Through the unpredictable metaphor of Vincent Van Gogh’s temporary isolation in a mental hospital, played by Alessandro Preziosi, the show is a sort of psychological thriller around the theme of artistic creativity that leaves the viewer with bated breath from beginning to end.
The text that won the Tondelli Award at Riccione Theater 2005 for “… clear, tense writing, of rare dramatic immediacy, capable of restoring the torment of the characters with fierce expressive immediacy” (from the motivation of the Jury ed) signed by Stefano Massini with his dry dramaturgy but rich in poetic cues, it offers considerable opportunities for reflection on the relationship between the arts and on the role of the artist in contemporary society.
Suspension, lability, boundary: Massini’s writing, in its galloping narrative tension, offers the possibility of a real investigation in those places, rugged and mobile, internal subjects of difficult identification, placed in the complex mechanism of the human mind. The close dialogue, implied, between Van Gogh and his brother Theo, proposes not only an objective wide-angle on the human story of the artist, but rather reveals a submerged stage.
“Van Gogh – underlines Alessandro Preziosi – subjected and fortuitously bent by his own brain dynamics lets himself be present already present to his disorder. It is in the room of a mental hospital that appears to us. In the devastating neutrality of a void ”.
And so, it is in the fact that his desperation is revealed and investigated. His reasoned attempt to escape the immutability of time, the absence of color to which he is forced, the perennial clamor he is conscious of, inside as well as outside the granite “white castle” and above all the constant doubt on the exact location and consistency of reality.
