Summer Readings in the Gardens of Castel Sant’Angelo
From June 20 to September 1, in the Gardens of Castel Sant’Angelo, a whole new edition along the most beloved “ enchanted walk “ of the Roman Summer.
Culture is play, music, relaxation, craftsmanship, dance, time spent in the trees and, inevitably, books. In one of the most evocative corners of the capital , a relaxing oasis just a few steps from St. Peter’s Basilica where you can spend a pleasant time under the trees among presentations, meetings and concerts in the Piazzetta degli Eventi or spending time with the whole family in the spaces dedicated to the little ones i. A special place is also reserved for quality craftsmanship to discover perhaps enjoying a good aperitif between one page and another in the two beautiful Readings bars: the Bistrot del Passetto and the Bistrot Letture d’Estate. I will also be able to go in search of the lost book but also satisfy the curiosity and the taste for forgotten but still functioning vintage objects.
The Gardens will host a rich program of evenings that combine the magic of music and literature: the performance by Gioia Di Biagio accompanied by Le Cardamomò; the Roman preview of the new book by Frank Lisciandro on Jim Morrison; the poetry in jazz of Liè Larousse and Gianluca Pavia with Paolo Damiani. In the avenues of the Gardens, there will also be the „ladies of the extra-virgin“, the producers of the Pandolea Association, who with their tastings will reveal to the public the immense heritage of typical Italian extra-virgin olive oil.
The activities of Summer Readings
Always, Summer Reading activities are aimed at raising funds for Peter Pan Onluswhich, since 1994, deals with the reception of families with children and adolescents admitted to the oncology wards of the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital in Rome. Saturday, June 29th, the Great Feast of Peter Pan is awaited, a special occasion with solidarity in which Letture d’Estate offers the „Trilly Spritz aperitif“, accompanied by the ritual ping-pong tournament and many surprises designed to support this charity project of international importance. There will be other events of social importance such as the day „I’ll take you with me. Humanity in the World. Art, music, history and street food „scheduled on 12 July by the Network of associations for the rights of refugees and migrants coordinated by Amnesty International.
Along the avenues of the Promenade of dreams and desires, you can meet table tennis, table football and chess, available to all those who, between an aperitif and a musical event, will want to enjoy the playful dimension that has always characterized the event in which there will be the traditional launch of the „world’s most difficult Crossword“ by Ennio Peres. Still, the Gardens will see the return of the skilled hands of the artisans of ArtIngegno, the collective of Arti & Mestieri that, in addition to enhancing slow craftsmanship and works of creative genius, will accompany the public to discover the use of new materials and cutting-edge techniques. An island that, in addition to offering artifacts with man-made and sustainable manufacturing processes, will show how objects take shape thanks to living demonstrations, not just for the little ones.
After the success of the last edition, the charm of dancing evenings returns in the magic of starry nights: every Wednesday Tango with the Milonga El Castillo curated by Liv & Bossi and again Lindy Hop and demonstration lessons with sessions open to the public by Swinghaus starting from Saturday 13 July. In addition, Summer Readings will host the Ferragosto Great Party with Giorgio Cuscito and the Swing Valley Band. 7
You will also have the opportunity to train and care for the mind and the body thanks to the activities promoted by a virtuous reality of the Roman territory, the Shiatsu Igea School, which this year will again allow you to discover the secrets and benefits of ancient and fascinating discipline.
Summer Readings 2019 has a very low environmental impact and aims to guarantee a long-lasting redevelopment of the Castel Sant’Angelo Gardens through continuous maintenance works of gardening, pruning, deratization and monitoring already in progress, preserving with the Rome Garden Service Capital. Not only: with particular attention to the most recent environmental problems, Letture d’Estate refreshment points will be equipped with compostable dishes and crockery, continuing a good practice that is part of the identity of the event.
The event – completely self-financed, free and open every day from morning to night – is organized by the Italian Invitation to Read Federation and is part of the program of the Roman Summer promoted by Roma Capitale Department of Cultural Growth with the contribution of SIAE. The programming of events designed for each visitor is the result of the creativity of Margherita Schirmacher and Lucio Villani, respectively curator and artistic director of Letture d’Estate and Stefania Cane for the cycles of events dedicated to children.
