180 concerts, on the banks of the Tiber, at the foot of Castel Sant’Angelo
for a summer full of jazz with the best Italian and international artists.
The summer program of Gregory’s Jazz Club along the banks of the Tiber for a new edition starts again on Wednesday 5 June , rich in music and with the scenery that has characterized it over the last two years: Castel Sant’Angelo. With 180 concerts on the calendar, the „Gregory’s Jazz By The River“ promises to be one of the most evocative salons of Roman jazz, under the banner of great national and international names.
An area of 400 square meters set up and embellished with parlors, in typical jazz club style, with the possibility of discovering the original culinary proposal composed of the best of the Italian regional tradition and a fusion elaboration of Japanese cuisine. But it is the selection of the cocktail bar that has made Gregory’s famous in its 25 years of activity: the choice of the most refined and prestigious whiskey labels, a mixology of the highest level and a refined wine list.
The „Gregory’s Jazz By The River“, open every day, will offer two concerts a day: the first to be enjoyed at sunset in the late afternoon, sipping a drink during a good aperitif; the second, the main one, to accompany dinner in the usual evening time.
On the summer stage of Lungotevere degli Altoviti, under Ponte Sant’Angelo, the most renowned artists of the Italian and international jazz scene will take turns without forgetting the jam sessions, a moment of absolute sharing loved by musicians of all latitudes.
Also this year the Smalls Live Collective will be presented again: a three-day event in collaboration with the Smalls Jazz Club of New York that will bring the best artists made in USA, a land that gave birth to jazz, in the Roman summer. The names of drummer Joe Farnsworth, Danny Grissett and Jessie Davis are confusing.
It starts on June 5 and 6 Giovanni Amato, historical signature of our local jazz. On the 7th it is the turn of the double-bass player Pat Senatore and his quartet: Pat is a real legend, which has performed with the greatest of the world jazz like Carmen McRae and Freddie Hubbard.
Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 it is the turn of the talented Iberian saxophonist Ernesto Aurignac: despite his young age he has had the opportunity to perform with the likes of Lee Konitz and Darryl Hall.
Since its opening the club has represented for the Italian musicians of the last generations first a gym and then a reference, for some a real home and is proud of having contributed in part to the development of the Italian jazz scene that still represents one of the most valid and appreciated international realities. Since 1996, Gregory’s, in its historic location in Via Gregoriana, has been pursuing an idea summarized in the motto „In jazz we trust“: spreading the culture of jazz by enhancing the popular aspect of a music, which contrary to what is often thought, manages to be catchy and enjoyable. Promoting and conveying the styles, the fundamental figures and the imagery that jazz has impressed in the history of the twentieth century means first of all creating a story of
„Gregory’s Jazz by the River“ is an invitation for eyes, ears and palate; a temptation to abandon oneself to live an experience that brings the essence of jazz to the heart of Rome.
