Spanish Literature Week

From Monday 6 to Monday 13 May 2019, Rome hosts the „Week of Literature in Spanish“: 6 events promoted and organized by the Instituto Cervantes with Spanish, Spanish-American and Italian writers and authors, protagonists of a series of meetings / dialogues at the entrance free, in various places in the city.

It starts on May 6th at 6.30pm in the Sala Dalí of the Instituto Cervantes, in Piazza Navona 91, where the Cuban writer and journalist Leonardo Padura, interviewed by the magistrate / writer Giancarlo De Cataldo, will present his latest novel „The transparency of time“. A multi-award-winning author of successful novels, essays on literary subjects and journalistic investigations, Padura has won critical acclaim and audience with the cycle of novels starring the detective Mario Conde, translated into many languages ​​and published in Italy by Bompiani.

Tuesday 7 May, again at Sala Dalí, two meetings will be held. The first at 6.00 pm with the Spanish writer Edurne Portela who will present her latest work “Meglio axenza” (Edizioni Lindau), awarded as the best work of fiction in 2018 by the Gremio de librerías de Madrid. With her, the Argentine journalist of Italian origin Elisabetta Piqué, Vatican correspondent for the newspaper La Nación.

Then, at 7.30 pm, the journalist and writer Stefania Parmeggiani will introduce Paco Ignacio Taibo II with his latest novel „Let’s come back as the shadows“ (The New Frontier). Born in 1949 from Gijon, but resident in Mexico, Paco Ignacio Taibo taught history and literature at several Mexican universities as well as being the founder of a new genre of crime fiction in Latin America. His most famous works (translated into 29 languages) are the biography of Ernesto Guevara, „Without losing the tenderness“.

The first 3 meetings of the cycle are organized in collaboration with the Encuentro festival in Perugia.

„Novísimos & Novissimi“ is the title of the dialogue featuring poets and writers Antonio Colinas and Nanni Balestrini, on May 9th at 6.30pm in the Sala Dalí, inspired by the neo-avant-garde, estética novísima, Group 63, experimental poetry and Italian and Spanish literary movements of the twentieth century.

The next day at 11 am, instead, Antonio Colinas will hold a conference at the University La Sapienza, introduced by Professor Isabella Tomassetti. The meeting entitled „Para llorar lágrimas de luz“ will take place at the Department of European, American and Intercultural Studies.

Finally, on Monday 13 May at 6 pm, the writer and literary critic of Madrid Marta Sanz presents her latest book „Showbiz“ at the Biblioteca María Zambrano, in via di Villa Albani. The meeting, moderated by writer and screenwriter Valerio Cruciani, is part of the „Europa in circolo“ reading club organized in collaboration with the EUNIC Rome Cluster.
