The International Literature Festival of Rome, historic demonstration of the Capital organized by the Institutions of Libraries of Rome, promoted by Roma Capitale – Department of Cultural Growth of Rome and organized by Zètema Culture Project back in the Capital from 3 May to 3 July 2019.
At the center of the 2019 edition of the Festival will be the eight evenings at the Basilica of Maxentius at the Roman Forum or – scheduled from 4 to 28 June, conceived and directed by Maria Ida Gaeta directed by Fabrizio Arcuri. The protagonists of the events will be the most interesting authors of the international literary scene.
But the Festival will go beyond the Basilica of Massenzio, with meetings and events at the Casa delle Letterature, Casa del Cinema and in the Libraries of Rome from 3 May to 3 July.
The theme of the 2019 edition
The theme chosen for the 2019 edition , which will be the red thread for all the meetings, is “ The future of the classics – When does a contemporary text give itself as a classic?“ . Each guest author will answer this question by reading, as usual, an unpublished text written specifically for the event.
The authors include Antonio Scurati, who starts the event, Alberto Manguel, Chiara Gamberale, Valerio Massimo Manfredi, Alicia Giménez-Bartlett. The Roberto Saviano Festival closes. On June 13th the Festival will host the 5 finalist authors of the 2019 Strega Prize and two winners of editions of the Formentor International Literature Award .
But the Festival LETTERATURE wanted by the Institutions of Libraries of Rome, by the president Paolo Fallai and by the Board of Administration, will go beyond the eight appointments to the Basilica of Massenzio , that will have a preview on May 16 at the Auditorium of the Macro Asylum.
Great music will return with a concert on June 9th , realized in collaboration with the musicians of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia who returns after forty years to play Massenzio, and with the film-show on The magic flute of the Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio June 14th. While this edition of the Festival will feature a mini-festival of cinema classics, in collaboration with the Casa del Cinema, in the outdoor arena of Villa Borghese. The Festival also this year – is the third year of the „management“ entrusted to the Institutions of Libraries of Rome – takes place throughout the city thanks to the involvement of the entire network of the Libraries of Rome and the Bibliopoint.
From May 3 to June 5 there will be meetings at the Casa delle Letterature and the Biblioteca Flaminia with the twelve semifinalists of the Strega 2019. The prestigious literary prize will also be the focus of an exhibition, curated by the Riccardi Archive, open until the end of June at the Biblioteca Flaminia. Exhibitions and in-depth activities will be dedicated to the historical collections of the Libraries of Rome: the Giorgio Caproni funds, Don Roberto Sardelli, the complete collection of the Corriere dei Piccoli, the Enzo Siciliano fund and the Bia Sarasini fund, owned respectively by the Marconi libraries, Raffaello, Tortora, Casa delle Letterature and Mameli.
The relationship between classics and children’s literature will have a preview on May 23 at the European library when the new bibliography of the Libraries of Legality dedicated to the classics will be presented in collaboration with Ibby Italy. In the context of Letterature Off, the section of the Festival inaugurated last year, the project „Mamme narranti“, four spectacular readings, in collaboration with Andrea Satta and the Association, will be presented in the libraries of Quarticciolo, Mameli, De Mauro and Mandela. Cultural Têtes de Bois, focused on fairy tales told by Italian and foreign mothers. As many spectacular readings will be realized also in the stations of the reference Metro C of the four libraries.
Among the events that will be hosted at the Casa delle Letterature will be the photo exhibition of the artist Sze Tsung Nicolas Leong , dedicated to the places of the Festival and realized in collaboration with the American Academy in Rome, starting on May 30th; the meeting on May 6 with the jurors of the Formentor Award in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy; the conferences „The future of the classics: between languages - The Italian story yesterday, today and tomorrow (May 30) and“ The future of the classics: Generative Art, Futuring Past „(June 7).
