To commemorate and celebrate the 74th anniversary of the liberation from the National Socialist reign of terror, we celebrate on May 8, 2019 at 19:30 clock at the Vienna Heroes Square. The Mauthausen Committee Austria (MKÖ) is hosting the Festival of Joy for the seventh time with a concert by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In addition to the Liberation Day, the Festival of Joy in 2019 will also focus on Europe and human rights. Short videos on the Festival of Joy with a message from the European Commission, the Ambassadors of the Liberations, the Jewish Community, the Association GEDENKDIENST and the Documentation Center of Austrian Resistance will open the festival of joy. The ceremony will take place in the words of Federal President Dr. Ing. Alexander Van der Bellen and the welcome by MKÖ Chairman Willi Mernyi. The highlight of the ceremony will be the speech of contemporary witness and concentration camp survivor Shaul Spielmann. The Wiener Symphoniker will perform a free open-air concert in 2019 under the direction of Finnish conductor Eva Ollikainen and star violinist Pekka Kuusisto. Also in 2019, the music program of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra is again closely related to the overarching theme of the celebrations. The program draws a musical arc from the turmoil of the pre-war period over the horror of dictatorship to the joy of the ultimate triumph of humanity. As in recent years, the Festival of Joy concludes with the „Ode to Joy“ from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, which will be sung by Conchita with the audience this year. Katharina Stemberger will be leading the event.
The Festival of Joy takes place in Vienna’s Heldenplatz in all weathers. Seats are limited for the elderly and people with special needs. Seat reservation is not possible. ORF III broadcasts the event live.
