The exhibition The body of the voice. Carmelo Bene, Cathy Berberian, Demetrio Stratos arrives at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni from 9 April to 30 June 2019. It is an exhibition dedicated to the voice understood as pure sound potential.
The body of the voice at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni
The exhibition project aims to retrace the events that, in the wake of the artistic avant-gardes of the twentieth century, broke the indissoluble link between the meaning of the word and its sound dimension, through the choice of some works by three extraordinary protagonists: the American mezzo-soprano singer of origin Armenian Cathy Berberian (1925-1983), the actor and director Carmelo Bene (1937–2002) and the Greek-born singer-musician Demetrio Stratos (1945-1979).
The innovative work of research and experimentation undertaken by the three great artists accompanies visitors on an original and completely new journey to discover this fundamental human potential. On display more than 120 works including photos, videos, archive materials, original scores, correspondences, documents exposed for the first time to the public as well as interactive exhibits, listening areas and electronic equipment used by artists in order to explore the limits of their vocal possibilities.
The collection of substantial documentation was possible thanks to the consultation of various archives and the careful research work of Anna Cestelli Guidi and Francesca Rachele Oppedisano , curators of the exhibition, who found surprising and never divulged material before.
The exhibition is enriched by two scientific sections: the first, introductory, curated by Franco Fussi, physician-surgeon, specialist in Phoniatrics and Otolaryngology, will offer visitors an accurate analysis of the interior of the resonance cavity where the voice is configured in its carnality. The second, curated by Graziano Tisato, researcher at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies (ISTC) – CNR of Padua, is located inside the Stratos section and consists of three interactive stations created ad hoc for the exhibition, through which it will be possible to deepen the understanding of the vocal effects produced by the artist.
