The Bastakia Quarter and Dubai Museum
The Bastakia Quarter in Bur Dubai is one of the city’s most picturesque heritage sites. It was bulit in 19th century by Persian merchants. Its narrow walking lanes are flanked by sand-coloured houses topped with wind towers, which provide natural air-conditioning. Today, there are about 50 buildings containing museums, craft shops, cultural exhibits, courtyard cafes, art galleries and two boutique hotels.
Dubai museum. The museum is a fantastic display of the short history of Dubai. Housed in the Al Fahidi Fort which was built in 1787, the oldest existing building in the city – you’ll encounter colourful dioramas and exhibits that depict everyday life in the days before the discovery of oil. The museum features galleries that recreate historic Arab houses, mosques, Souks, date farms and desert and marine life. It also includes an exhibit on pearl diving, with sets of pearl merchants weights, scales and sieves.
