Chitty Chitty Brecht Brecht

A play about love affairs, plagiarism and workers’ rights. On 20 May 1929, the poet Bertolt Brecht leaves Berlin for the South of France. Behind him, he leaves the bloody police suppression of a workers’ revolt, the chaos of parallel love affairs and a series of plagiarism accusations.

Brecht will never arrive in France. On the long-distance road 27, between Hünfeld and Fulda, he drives his Steyr XII into a tree. In “Chitty Chitty Brecht Brecht” everything revolves around this accident. What really happened? Was the accident truthfully reconstructed? What was Brecht thinking about during the drive, what was he dreaming about? Did the accident provide the model for Brecht’s “Street Scene”? For a new play? Did Steyr give him a new car? Could he have avoided the tree with a flying automobile a la Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?
