Maria Stuarda opera

20.04.2023 - 29.04.2023

Two queens, one throne. Romantic opera in two acts in Italian language, Slovak and English subtitles. The suggestive production of the opera is being prepared at the Slovak National Theatre by an international team of creators: the French director Gilbert Blin, the Italian conductor Marco Guidarini, the American set designer Alexander McGregor and the Czech designer Josef Jelinek, who designed the magnificent historical costumes. In this impressive operatic work, Mariana Sajko and Ľubica Vargicová will appear in the main roles in alternations as Maria Stuarda, Denisa Hamárová as Alžbeta and Terézia Kružliaková as Alžbeta. Director Gilbert Blin prepares a production in the best sense of the word classical, focusing on the emotions and relationships of the protagonists.

Gaetano Donizetti wrote Maria Stuarda when he was at the height of his career as a composer. And although he succumbed to the allure of the new Romantic literature in the themes of many of his works, he was fond of returning to English history as an enticing source of stagey, spectacular themes. He was intrigued by the fate of Mary Queen of Scots in Friedrich von Schiller’s adaptation, but, unlike the model, Donizetti avoided political and religious themes. He did, however, retain the legendary fictional scene of Mary Stuart’s meeting with Elizabeth I. Expressive dramatic conflict, a rich psychological profile of the characters, beautiful music and a great story with two rival queens make for an evocative piece of historical opera theatre in French director Gilbert Blin’s evocative production.
