Every year in March or April, lorry loads of apples, beer, wine, and pumpkin products travel up the southern motorway to Vienna for the four-day Styrian Spring (Steiermark Frühling) festival on the Rathausplatz square.
This year, the festival takes place from March 30 to April 2, 2023! Plenty of food, wine and other delicacies will be offered at great prices!
The festival honours one of Austria’s mountainous provinces, its culture, and (especially) its culinary delights. A 30-metre apple strudel, for example, was featured one year. The square in front of the Rathaus is transformed into a miniature Styrian village, complete with booths and wooden cabins, turf, mulch, and floral displays that add rural charm to the urban landscape.
Many people appear in traditional attire, from elderly men with imperious moustaches to young people wearing Lederhosen and sunglasses – not just booth staff, but also visitors. Numerous booths cover the province’s main tourism regions, from Graz to the extensive Alpine areas, and you can watch demonstrations of traditional crafts like basket weaving.
