The LUSTR Illustration and Comics Festival will celebrate its tenth birthday this autumn. In the exhibition at Klementinum, the audience will have a unique opportunity to see together illustrated posters from all previous editions of the festival, created by Czech illustrators such as Ilona Polanski, Juliána Chomová, Patrik Antczák, Maria Makeeva, Jakub Bachorík, Barbora Idesová, Michal Bačák and others. There will also be a selection of art prints that have shone at the festival in recent years. The exhibition is for sale.
LUSTR 9
INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ILLUSTRATION AND COMICS
The first exhibition of this year’s edition will be entitled Wild Boars – Expressive Tendencies in Illustration. The curators will introduce the audience to the distinctive Czech tradition of expressive illustration, which can be traced back to the works of the self-taught painter and graphic artist Josef Váchal. The generation of Jiří Šalamoun and Květa Pacovská had the strongest influence on the Czech illustration scene in this respect – together with them, the exhibition will also introduce unjustly neglected names such as Jindřich Kovařík, Miloslav Jágr, Václav Kabát or Alois Mikulka, whose wildness, fascination with children’s drawing and interest in unbridled line, anatomy and perspective are still followed by many artists today. Contemporary illustrators will include the North Bohemian cartoonist and graphic artist Martin Raudenský, the German visual artist Paul Waak and the Austrian illustrator and graphic artist Sarah Maria Schmidt. The exhibition will also be complemented by a selection of works by contemporary illustrators from Japan curated by Czech-based artist Saki Matsumoto.
Another, now traditional, part of the exhibition programme will be called Showcase of Young Talents. For the third time, this free showcase will present the best of what has been produced in the studios of young illustrators and comic book artists over the past year. Through this section, the festival aims to offer the freshest of the illustrator scene, as well as to introduce new names. The show will again be divided into two separate sections: comics and free illustration.
