21.10. Richard Bona
22.10. Yussef Dayes
23.10. Marcus Miller

FRIDAY – 21.10.2022

Bass guitarist Richard Bona hails from Cameroon and has studied and played in Germany, France, and New York. He has accompanied many big names, including Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Bobby McFerrin, Didier Lockwood, Joe Zawinul, Steve Gadd, Larry Coryell, Manu Dibango, Salif Keita, Mino Cinelu, and Michael Brecker.

For two years he was music director of Harry Belafonte’s projects. Richard was a professor of music at New York University and a tenured member of the Pat Metheny Group. As a sideman, he has appeared on over sixty albums, recording with fantastic musicians such as Mike Stern, Jaco Pastorius, and Béla Fleck, as well as famous singers such as Dianne Reeves and Anna-Maria Jopek.

His own production is a peculiar fusion of jazz and rock, inspired by the music of his native West Africa. In the last ten years, he has heavily blended Cuban music into his distinctive fusion.

His fifth album “Tiki” in 2005 brought him to world stardom. A year later he presented himself at the Bratislava Jazz Days Slovenská sporiteľňa, he played a legendary concert in PKO. His last Bratislava concert was seven years ago, he played with Mandekan Cubano project at Spring Jazzaks.

D.Y.K. (CZ)

A new project of Czech singer Vojtěch Dyke and two-time Grammy winner Ondrej Pivec rooted in Brooklyn, where together with other American artists they created a unique album. Premiering on a covid-delayed tour in the summer of 2021, it is still a novelty on the music scene.
The D.Y.K. album was created in New York City, with world-class musicians and musical freedom. Vojtěch praises himself for stepping out of his comfort zone and immersing himself in a world without boundaries. The first taste was the playful and danceable single Mr. Beat, inspired by Rowan Atkinson and the character Mr. Bean. The album D.Y.K., co-written by musician and producer Ondřej Pivec, was released in November 2019 on Universal Music. It was recorded entirely in New York, in collaboration with Ondřej Pivec, winner of two Grammy Awards for his collaboration with Gregory Porter.

Marek Szarvaš Project

The winner of last year’s Young Talent Stage competition will open Friday night. The Košice drummer and composer founded his own project after years of performing with a number of Slovak artists. His debut album “…and the rest of the world” from 2018 was nominated for best jazz album in the Esprit poll. This year he comes with his second album “Light Outside”, released on the Hevhetia label.

SATURDAY – 22.10.2022

Famed British drummer and producer Yussef Dayes was born right in one of the capitals of contemporary jazz, South London. His Jamaican-born father was a jazz bassist, his older brother produced jungle-style recordings. Yussef was apprenticed to Billy Cobham.

He already made a good name for himself on the scene in 2016 with the album “Black Focus”, which he released while still a member of the short-lived Yussef Kamaal project. Yussef Dayes then branched out on his own to dive straight into collaborations: he recorded his first solo singles “Love Is The Message” and “Blacked Out” with new jazz star Alfa Mist, who wowed us at the Spring Jazz Festival four years ago. Later he was a special guest on Kamasi Washington’s UK tour, and finally joined forces with Tom Misch, London-based soul-jazz singer and guitarist. They released their now iconic collaborative album “What Kinda Music” in 2020 on the Blue Note label. In the same year, Yussef recorded his third solo single “Duality”, which featured guest appearances by keyboardist Charlie Stacey and bassist Rocco Palladino, the talented son of the famous Pino Palladino.

The latter lineup also symbolically hinted at his growing jazz tastes – renamed the Youssef Dayes Trio. One of the few pandemic concerts is captured on the fantastic double album “Welcome To The Hills”. The trio was then joined by Malik Vienna, the band changed its name to the Yussef Dayes Experience, and embarked on a year-long tour, which after a spring Australian and a summer American leg will see them come to us for the Bratislava Jazz Days Slovenská sporiteľňa.

In the person of Yussef Dayes, Jazz Days will welcome an innovative drummer, bandleader, and producer, a distinctive figure in contemporary London jazz who is pushing fusion into the contemporary sound. Yussef is and has headlined all the prominent festivals in Europe and around the world.

Poppy Ajudha is a 24 year old singer and songwriter from South London. Her unique voice and melodies have drawn comparisons to some of the great classic jazz and soul singers. Combining this with her ability to sound fresh and exciting sets her apart and puts her at the forefront of the South London music scene – currently the most prolific and important scene in Europe. With a British father born in Saint Lucian and a British mother, she grew up with a variety of influences. Musically, while her father played a lot of Motown and Roots Reggae, her mother introduced her to rare groove, funk and soul music through the cassettes she played during long car journeys to see her family. It was also through her mother that Poppy was introduced to feminism – the independence and strength was palpable from the way she raised Poppy and her sisters.

In addition to 2 critically acclaimed EPs – “Femme” and “Patience” and recent single “Devil’s Juice”, Poppy’s headline shows have taken her around the UK and Europe including a sold out show at London’s Village Underground. She has previously toured with the likes of Kate Tempest, Tom Misch and Mahalia. Poppy has also appeared as the face of Nike FA18 Womenswear’s ‘Metallic Sheen’ campaign and was the face of outdoor clothing brand Napapijiri’s global ‘Icons’ campaign. She was awarded Soul Act of the Year on Jazz FM and nominated for 2x UK MVAs.

It didn’t end there as Poppy was selected for former US President Barack Obama’s year-end playlist for her feature on Tom Misch’s ‘Disco Yes’.

She released her debut album in the spring and will be performing it at BJD on Saturday.

Bashavel (SK)

Bashavel was born in 2006 as a joint project of leading Slovak musicians who had previously collaborated in various jazz and multi-genre formations such as the Pacora Trio and the NBS Trio. In 2017, the group recorded their profile album “Hoorhay”, which was very well received both at home and abroad, and won the Radio Head Awards for Best Slovak Jazz Album. In 2020, Bashavel was selected by an international expert jury as the sole representative of Slovakia to participate in the prestigious WOMEX 2020 music fair.

SUNDAY – 23.10.2022:

American Marcus Miller is one of the best living bass guitarists. He played on six of Miles Davis’ albums and was his greatest favourite. He received Grammy awards not only as producer of stars such as Luther Vandross, David Sanborn, Chaka Khan, Wayne Shorter, and Miles Davis, but also for his two solo jazz albums.

Marcus Miller is a versatile multi-instrumentalist, playing bass guitar, piano, bass clarinet, and saxophone since childhood. At the age of fifteen, he was already earning his keep as a musician in his native New York City. He has worked with many megastars such as Frank Sinatra, Luther Vandross, George Benson, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, David Sanborn, and Al Jarreau. He has over 500 recordings and collaborations to his credit.
Miller is trans-genre. In his work you can hear funk, R’n’B, but mostly fantastic jazz. Miller completely prepared Davis’ iconic album “Tutu”. He has composed music for numerous films, released 20 solo studio and concert albums.

He last performed at the Bratislava Jazz Days Slovak Savings Bank in 2008 as a member of the stellar bass trio S.M.W. (Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten), and in 2012 we welcomed him to the Spring Jazz Festival. His current band features trumpeter Russell Gunn, keyboardist Julian Pollack, saxophonist Donald Hayes, and drummer Anwar Marshall.

Sunday’s concert evening features French-American jazz star Cyrille Aimée. His work combines elements of jazz, Cuban rhythms and French gypsy swing. Her latest album Move On: A Sondheim Adventure earned her a Grammy nomination and she is considered a star of jazz improvisation. The acclaimed singer started out singing on the streets of Europe, but has worked her way up to the stages of the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals. The New York Times named her a rising star in the galaxy of jazz singers. Among countless awards, Aimée has won the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition and the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition.

AMC TRIO Plus ft. Peter Lipa (SK)

The Jazzmen and AMC Trio have a rich history together: in 2004 the group debuted at our festival as a trio, in 2007 with Ulf Wakenius, in 2011 with Randy Brecker, and in 2014 with Mark Whitfield. The AMC trio has seven albums, two with Wakenius, and one with Brecker. An eighth album is currently being recorded, again with Randy Brecker. In 2015, during the recording of Very Keen Attack, the trio enriched their acoustic sound with a variety of electric sounds and expanded the trio to include three more musicians, forming AMC Trio Plus, which also recorded their most recent album, “Plus”. Peter Lipa will be the special guest of the concert at our festival.
