EnsembleSpectrum_kultúrne leto v Starom Meste. “Femenine” will lull you into a musical reverie. Organic music in which phrases naturally evolve into one another, with multiple layers of them merging and disappearing into the flow of time…
We will hear the work of the enfant terrible of the New York scene, the phenomenal singer, pianist and composer Julius Eastman (1940-1990), whose work virtually faded into obscurity after his sudden death in the early 1990s. Today, the legacy of this extravagant, joyful composer is enjoying a renaissance. Eastman loved to shock society. As a representative of the queer community with African-American origins, he excelled at it with his pungent, provocative song titles while touring in the ’70s and ’80s. Extravagant lifestyle and addiction led the remarkable representative of a very particular minimalism to a life on the streets. Not surprisingly, many of his works are considered lost.
In this unique 70-minute interpretation of Eastman’s score, the EnsembleSpectrum chamber orchestra is invited to work in dialogue with Eastman’s unique creative impulses in the form of guided improvisation. Come hear a blend of adherence to Eastman’s specific instructions with the orchestra’s embrace of individual and collective musical decision-making, an ongoing three-way conversation between Eastman, the individual members of EnsembleSpectrum, and the ensemble as a whole.
