World Music Festival Bratislava

18.08.2022 - 21.08.2022

World Music Festival Bratislava – new places, new names, new experiences.

The seventh edition of the world music festival in Bratislava will take place from 18 to 21 August in various locations in the historic centre of Bratislava and will feature musicians not only from Slovakia, but also from Argentina, Egypt, Cape Verde, Poland, Portugal and Ukraine. Its biggest international star will be Vieux Farka Touré, a composer, guitarist and singer from Mali.

This time the festival is part of the Bratislava Cultural Summer and offers its fans from Slovakia and abroad a diverse mix of music and top performers from different parts of the world. The aim of the seventh edition of the largest world music festival in Slovakia is to offer the best of the Slovak and international scene. The festival will start on Thursday 18 August with the opening event at the Klariska Concert Hall, featuring the Polish trio Wernyhora, Slovak multi-instrumentalist Michal Smetanka and Ukrainian bandura player Volodymyr Voyt. These performers will show the audience how culturally and historically connected the three neighbouring countries are, sharing many common traditions and destinies.

In the following days, for the first time in Slovakia, performers from Cape Verde will be presented, namely the Tabanka group with their funaná dance style, or the Egyptian duo Tarek Abdallah and Adel Shams el-Din, who will bring the traditional style of wasla for oud and percussion. For the first time in Slovakia, Ricardo Silva, an excellent Portuguese guitar player who, among others, accompanied the famous fado singer Mariza, will also perform. South America will be represented by the Guanaco Trio, whose members grew up in different cultural backgrounds but are united by their love of Argentine music. A performer from Mali also promises an extraordinary experience. Vieux Farka Touré is the son of the famous Ali Farka Touré, a three-time Grammy winner in the world music category, but he has managed to step out of his father’s shadow. After a successful musical career in North America, this year he released a new album, Les Racines (The Roots), which follows the best traditions of the “desert blues”. He will present this album in Bratislava in a trio with an American bass guitarist and a Malian percussionist.

The World Music Festival in Bratislava traditionally also gives space to well-known or emerging musicians from Slovakia, who will present themselves to local fans and foreign delegates. This time it will be Sisa Michalidesová with a live version of her album Commedia, Ildikó Kali and her Zlatá panna, Júlia Kozáková with her project Manuša, the hooligan-folk trio Varkocs and the latest project of Alapastel with the vocal group Neha!. In addition to concerts, the festival will also offer an international conference with foreign experts and a workshop for the general public. Traditional venues such as the courtyard of the Zichy Palace will be joined by some new ones, such as the Klariska Concert Hall, Teatro Colorato and the Majestic Music Club.

More details about the festival programme can be found on the website and on FB.

The event is supported from public funds by the Fund for the Support of the Arts, as the main partner.
