Långholmen park

Långholmen is sure to charm you throughout the whole year. In summer, it´s a great place to swim, bathe and spend time with friends and family. With a lot of sightseeing and historical buildings to offer, you´re sure to find something to interest you!

This idyllic island is a popular spot for picnics, swimming, and recreation for Stockholmers and visitors alike, but this wasn’t always the case. From the eighteenth century until 1974, Långholmen was a dreaded prison island. The old prison has become a popular hostel with a prison museum. There are also beaches, open-air stages, charming buildings and a nice allotment garden area on Långholmen. The island is also home to Mälarvarvet (The Mälaren Yard), one of Stockholm’s oldest shipyards, and a small Bellman museum with a café. There is a wonderful view from the east side of the island over Riddarfjärden and Gamla Stan.

Långholmen is a green and lush nature park with wild greenery. The park is a popular walking park. The beautiful heritage buildings in the park, the views over the water and the many magnificent trees contribute to Långholmen’s distinctive character.

In the park finds several old buildings. Among them is the former prison, which is now a hotel and hostel. There is also Karlshälls farm and Stora Henriksvik, where there is a Bellman museum and a small café. There are a total of six facilities on Långholmen with cultural history remains registered by the Swedish National Heritage Board. These include a petroglyph and a boat deposit in the water to the north of the island. Mälarvarvet is located on the eastern part of Långholmen.

The island also has playgrounds, a sports field, an open-air theatre, a rock pool, a beach, colonial gardens, jetties and boat docks. In winter, sledding is popular in the park.

History:
Långholmsparken is one of the mountain parks built in Stockholm around the turn of the last century. In connection with the reclamation of Pålsundet in the 1870s, the mountain was covered with soil and some 2,400 trees were planted.
