Fire has played an important sacred role in almost all cultures since the dawn of mankind. It was revered, feared, personified. Mankind recognised its image in fire and worshipped it as a god; light is created from matter as the body is transformed into light through the evolution of the soul.
Human life is also a process of transformation; from the gross material plane, deeds, emotions, spiritual qualities arise under the influence of the spirit. This qualitative transformation can be experienced within the framework of the fire dance.
Both fire and dance have been with us since the dawn of mankind. Both are the embodiment of power, energy and life. Fire, by its very nature, can only be impulsive, hot, burning, just as the ecstasy of dance is an enthralling pulse. The restraint of the slow, delicate steps, the dormant heat of the embers, capable of erupting, erupting, rumbling at any moment. Dance is one of our oldest means of expression, alongside human voices. Whatever culture we look at, we find sacred aspects of dance everywhere.
