Vienna’s largest children’s literature festival has been attracting numerous young and old readers every year since 1979. It is organised by the Institute for Youth Literature and kidlit medien GmbH with the support of the Cultural Department of the City of Vienna.

Within one week, the wide range of events gives visitors the opportunity to encounter literature directly. From interactive readings to creative workshops to varied storytelling theatre – in almost all events children can enter into dialogue with artists and experience a lively approach to the medium of books through encounters with authors and illustrators. The main attraction of the festival is the exhibition of over 1,000 current children’s and youth books, which cater to a wide range of reading interests and invite visitors to browse at their leisure.

The Vienna Children’s Literature Festival “Literatur für junge Leser:innen” (Literature for Young Readers) has established itself as a firm and important factor in the field of reading and literature promotion – and in 2022 it will occupy the Theaterhaus Odeon for the first time.
