Opera in three acts in Czech language. A family opera by Antonín Dvořák based on the Czech folk fairy tale about the wise Jirka, the cheeky Káča and the cunning devil Marbuel.
In The Devil and Káča, Antonín Dvořák has masterfully combined the musical worlds of folk dance and song with the Wagnerian method of character motifs. The music of the work is full of excitement and colour, and its thrilling take-off is intensified by unique dynamic effects. The fantastic and folk scenes are contrastingly characterized with extraordinary theatrical sensitivity. During the peak period of his career, Dvořák composed this opera in a unified musical flow, with almost no separate arias, duets or ensembles, and he emphasised the role of the orchestra with a number of spectacular dance numbers. An excellent example of this is the famous Infernal Dance.
