Don Giovanni Opera

If you are looking for a place in the world where Mozart personally premiered one of his operas and where that opera is still performed today, then your answer is the Estates Theatre. The Opera of the National Theatre has nurtured this unique tradition with pride and care for decades. It is perhaps surprising, however, that Don Giovanni, this Prague “opera of operas” of world renown, has never before in the history of the National Theatre been staged by a non-native director.

The new staging of a traditional Mozart opera in the unique Estates Theatre is therefore actually fundamentally unconventional – this time Don Giovanni will be directed by the Swedish-Norwegian drama and opera director Alexander Mørk-Eidem together with the German conductor and Mozart specialist Karsten Januschke.

They have a wide scope for interpreting the figure of the famous commoner, who magnetically attracts the interest of women. Is he an incorrigible slave of his instincts, or a provocateur, a rebel, even a revolutionary, a man, a symbol, or a mere extra around whom Mozart draws the infinitely changing world of women’s emotions in the smallest detail… ?
