James, a travelling penguin from the South Pole, and Vladimir, a polar bear from the North Pole, meet on Arctic pack ice and become friends. They wonder why the nights last so long in their home country. To solve the mystery of the polar nights, they first build an observatory and then a spaceship in which they travel around the Earth, to Mars and to Saturn.
