Neustift am Walde is famous for its Kirtag. This custom dates back to the middle of the 18th century: At that time, Neustift winemakers went to visit Empress Maria Theresa with a harvest crown and asked for tax exemption after they had brought poor yields into a difficult economic situation. And the Empress not only exempted them from paying, but also gave them back the crown, with the stipulation that a Kirtag be held every year.
So even today on Neustifter Kirtag (every year in August) Weinhiata”, Altbursch” and other winemakers move through Neustift and Salmannsdorf and stop at the wine taverns. Numerous Kirtag stands and a rich programme full of entertainment will provide entertainment for the visitors. Plenty of stands with traditional festival food will be available.
