Giacomo Puccini is an author who portrays the cruel world of violence, hatred and selfish passions, as well as the world of love, with extraordinary dramaturgical sophistication. His world is not a world of great politics or romantic ideals of human liberation. It is a world of psychological miniature drawing, a complex world of interrelationships between small and large human stories. In Tosca, adverse circumstances deliver the diva Floria Tosca in the hands of a sadistic secret police chief, Baron Scarpia. In return for freeing her lover, the painter Cavaradossi, Scarpia demands the utmost price – Tosca’s honor.
Puccini depicts this tense dramatic conflict in a captivating musical language that has been winning the hearts of audiences around the world with its emotionality and melodic beauty for more than a hundred years.
