Opera

The performance of Bánk Bán, prepared for the Year of Hungarian National Unity, was presented on 19th of August 2020 on the open-air stage of the Margaret Island Theatre. The Erkel opera, based on the drama by József Katona, is a universal opera, and its message is appropriate for any opera stage at any time. Directed by Kossuth Prize winner Attila Vidnyánszky, the opera presents two worlds that are far apart, each with its own truth and beauty in their own closed reality, but without a harmonious transition between them, and which rather create tension and dissonance. Eternal and universal human emotions such as envy, hatred and jealousy drive the story. Forces that will be absolutely understandable a hundred years from now to all those who follow universal human sentiments, not only to those who have lived and know Hungarian history. The story, which has the depth of Shakespeare’s royal dramas and is elevated to even more poetic heights by the power of music, is brought to life by Hungary’s outstanding, internationally renowned opera singers. The opera will return to Margaret Island on 20 August 2021 to celebrate the founding of our state.
