Treasures of the Jewish Museum

Mária Bárkany – a native of Košice city, internationally acclaimed actress who has enjoyed success and recognition mainly in Germany. Thanks to her roles, she has travelled a large part of the world, from St. Petersburg to New York. But for today’s theatre scene and history, this diva is almost forgotten – which is why the Jewish Community Museum is bringing her story to life. Among other rare exhibits, one can, for example, enjoy the first-ever display of a reconstructed theatrical costume from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries – the gown Mária Bárkany wore to play the role of Mary Stuart. This costume was made in Paris. An unusual piece at the exhibition is also a painting by Ferdinand Katona, a well-known painter of Jewish origin, who was born in 1864 into a poor Jewish family in Spišská Stara Ves. This exhibition is a piece of Jewish history that should not be missed.
