Chamber concert with Easter theme

The Spectrum Quartet will perform Joseph Haydn’s Easter composition The Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ on the Cross in the Opera Salon of the Slovak National Theatre. This is one of the most interesting pieces in Haydn’s oeuvre. It was commissioned by the Cathedral of Cadiz, Spain, as music for the Good Friday ceremony – a cycle of seven meditative musical movements, each representing one of the last sentences Jesus Christ spoke in the last moments of his life, according to the text of the Bible. Haydn completed the composition in 1785, subtitled Seven Sonatas with an introduction and an earthquake at the end. He succeeded in perfectly capturing an expression full of anguish, inner drama and poignant participation in death, which Christians understand as the redemption of every human being. The original orchestral version was performed in 1787 in Cadiz, and a year later the composer arranged it in the form of a string quartet. A few decades later, an oratorio of the same name was composed, setting the biblical text to music. Our concert will feature a version for string quartet simultaneously with an actor’s rendition of the words of Christ.
