At the beginning of our visit, we will be able to notice in the square of St. Ignatius, the complex of the five palaces, called I Burrò, a typical work of theatrical and Rococo taste created by the architect Filippo Raguzzini. We will then enter the ‘enchanting church of S. Ignazio, built under the direction of Jesuit Father Orazio Grassi. Inside we will be able to admire the marvelous perspective paintings of the Glory of St. Ignatius by the Jesuit Andrea Pozzo. By the same artist we will also see the false dome, actually a large flat canvas that with the use of perspective artifices gives visitors the impression of being in front of a concave structure. In the apse, also by the Well, we will see the striking Scenes from the Life of St. Ignatius, including the Defense of Pamplona. Then we will move to the Ludovisi Chapel with the rich Sepulchral Monument to Pope Gregory XV by sculptor Pierre Legros. Leaving the church we will observe from the outside, the Oratory of St. Francis Xavier built by Jesuit preacher Pietro Caravita. When we reach Piazza del Collegio Romano, we will be able to glimpse the large facade of the building, built at the behest of Pope Gregory XIII as the final seat of the College in Rome. Looking above the facade, we will notice the ‘imposing structure of the astronomical observatory tower. Then we will find ourselves in front of the façade of the beautiful Chiesa Del Gesu’, with inside, on the vault, the extraordinary perspective effect of the Triumph of the Name of Jesus, a masterpiece by the Genoese Giovan Battista Gaulli known as Baciccio, who was also the author of the dome fresco. The architectural work of Andrea Pozzo, on the other hand, is the Chapel of St. Ignatius of Loyola, rich in gold and other precious materials. We will be able to witness the spectacle of the Baroque machine that animates the chapel: the large canvas depicting the saint will rise like a curtain and the gilded statue of Ignatius will appear amid music and lights. Other important works, such as the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier and the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, will complete our visit.
