Festival of Aztecs

The anniversary of the death of the world-famous Aztec ruler Moctezuma North Time for many festivities throughout Mexico. The Mexican community in Austria and the life of intercultural peace festivities in Vienna are joining forces to celebrate this anniversary with the aim of promoting positive encounters. Aztec food and drink and other Aztec and Mexican specialities, music and culinary delights, as well as children’s entertainment, etc.! The event will also feature traditional Aztec ritual dances, among other things!

The Mexican community in Austria is organising a colourful intercultural peace festival in Vienna!

Tenochtitlán, the capital of the Aztec Empire, must have been an extremely impressive sight. The Spanish conquerors under Hernán Cortés had never seen anything like it. When they arrived on 8 November 1519, the city had around 200,000 inhabitants. This made the metropolis known today as Mexico City the largest city on the American continent at that time, far larger also than almost all European cities.
But the city impressed the Spaniards not only because of its size, but also because of its location, its wealth and its meticulous organisation. Situated on a large island in Lake Texcoco, it was accessed from the shore by three large causeways. The Spaniards were particularly amazed at the huge market, where everything necessary for life was offered for sale and every commodity had its fixed place. The meeting of Cortés with King Moctezuma II in Tenochtitlán 500 years ago sealed the end of the Aztec empire and the beginning of centuries of worldwide European dominance.
