Augarten Vienna

12.03.2020 - 31.12.2024

The Augarten is a 52.2-hectare public park in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt, the city’s second district which is characterized by wonderful symmetry and splendour of colours. It is home to the city’s oldest Baroque park which was designed in the French Baroque style, with elaborate flower gardens and areas providing enough shadow to hide from the sun. Like most fenced public parks and gardens in Vienna, it is only open during the day and closes at sunset.

The Wiener Sängerknaben (the Vienna Boys’ Choir) in the Palais Augarten, the Augarten Porzellanmanufaktur (Augarten porcelain factory), the Augarten Contemporary (part of the sterreichische Galerie Belvedere, the Austrian Gallery housed in the Belvedere), the Filmarchiv Austria, a retirement home, a Jewish academic campus (called Lauder Chabad Campus), a paddling pool for children, and sports fields are all located in the Augarten. Two high anti-aircraft bunkers, also known as flak towers, are significant reminders of the Third Reich.

There are two places in the park where you can buy meals or snacks: the Bunkerei (partially housed in a former bunker) and the Filmarchiv, as well as two catering establishments, one of which is located in the Atelier Augarten. Since 2000, the Baroque park, palace, and the remaining portion of the original park wall, all built in the early 18th century, have been marked as historic monuments. Regardless of whether you want to do sports, sunbathe on the large lawn or relax on a shady park bench – the Augarten is a magical place that you should definitely visit.
