Park Oberlaa

12.03.2020 - 31.12.2024

The Kurpark Oberlaa is a little less central, but always worth a visit. The thematic areas of the spa park such as the allergy garden, the flower labyrinth, the film city or the Japanese garden are worth a little more time. The spa park is ideal for family trips. The exciting playgrounds, the animal enclosure and the extensive meadows for picnicking provide enough activity for a whole day in the nature.

History:
The motto of the second Vienna International Garden Show in 1974 was “From wilderness to a new recreation area for southern Vienna.” The garden show provided the Viennese authorities with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a large green area adjacent to the gardens of the Oberlaa health resort. Oberlaa’s thermal sulphur springs were discovered in the 18th century. Visitors can now “take the waters” in the middle of a sprawling park. A team of international landscape gardeners led by Frankfurt garden planner Erich Hanke designed the 1974 Garden Show. The site was a massive collection of show gardens set in a sprawling park landscape. Exotic, modern, nostalgic, and witty concepts were realised, as well as gardens for children and the elderly. The central theme was undulating, meandering paths and lines, some of which were based on a circle. Today, the area is a popular recreational destination for residents of the surrounding districts. The famous Oberlaa café and its cake shop are especially popular.
