We invite you to join us on a journey to the Underworld between 14 February and 30 March. During this six-week period, dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals will take over the Biodome.
The dinosaur exhibitions are a popular event for children and adults alike, offering a fascinating and exciting adventure. The exhibits usually showcase the most famous dinosaurs from the United States, Canada, Portugal, Tanzania and Australia. What few people know is that in Hungary, a tiny village called Iharkút is on the list of famous dinosaur sites. While the names of T-Rex, Oviraptor and Hadrosaurus are already being pronounced correctly by pre-school children, very few people have heard of Ajkaceratops, Hungarosaurus, Bakonydraco or Foxemys trabanti, although they are also primitive, and world-famous Hungarian primitive finds at that.
In addition to huge, in many cases life-size models of the best-known dinosaurs, the exhibition will also present a taste of the results of Hungarian dinosaur research, including material from the Iharkút excavations, thanks to the cooperation between the Hungarian Dinosaur Foundation and the Zoo Foundation. The head of the excavations, Dr. Attila Ősi, Head of the Department of Palaeontology at ELTE, has also agreed to give lectures on the Hungarian excavations at pre-announced times during the dinosaur exhibition.
The prehistoric experience will be rounded off with interactive excavations and various educational programmes, as the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden also considers education a priority. Those who visit the giant reconstructions, stalk the moving model, watch the educational films, try out the paleontological mini-playground, experience the adventures of the VR-prehistoric world, will not only experience but also learn. In addition to the dinosaurs, visitors can also meet dragons in part of the exhibition, as the legends, beliefs and tales about them are based on misidentified prehistoric bones found before the birth of modern science.
