At the beginning of February, one of Budapest’s most vibrant districts transforms into a celebration of culture, tradition and community. The local Chinese community invites visitors to a two-day Lunar New Year Festival at Chinatown Budapest, welcoming the Year of the Horse with an expanded and diverse program.
For 2026, the festival introduces several first-time highlights. Three cultural delegations arrive from China, bringing performances rarely seen in Hungary. Stage programs include lion and dragon dances, circus-style acts, kung fu demonstrations, folk dance, shadow puppetry and traditional instrumental music. Across the weekend, visitors can also enjoy a gala show, tai chi and qigong workshops, as well as spectacular fire-breathing and face-changing performances.
Food plays a central role in this year’s celebration. Two professional chefs from Chengdu will prepare authentic Sichuan street food, available exclusively during the festival. Visitors can taste freshly made noodles, chicken dishes, mochi and traditional sweet soups, alongside tea-pouring performances using long-neck kettles that combine gastronomy with visual artistry.
Indoor and outdoor areas offer continuous activities throughout both days. Guests can try on 26 brand-new hanfu costumes free of charge, take part in calligraphy and Chinese painting sessions, explore the Chinese zodiac, or join hands-on craft workshops such as sugar painting, paper cutting and seal carving. Outdoor spaces feature traditional games, a wishing tree and interactive dragon dance experiences.
The event is organized in cooperation with the China Cultural Center in Budapest and the ELTE Confucius Institute, ensuring an authentic and educational celebration that goes beyond entertainment and offers genuine cultural insight.
