Are you tempted by Mongolia? We are. Come to Večko on Monday, February 10, where you will find videos, a slideshow and a chat with Banská Bystrica traveler Marek Slobodnik about the great journey from Banská Bystrica to far away Mongolia on a Honda ATC 200 trike with Luaz 967 amphibious vehicles, aka Yellow Frogs.
Mongolia is one of the least populated countries in the world with a vast and diverse landscape that includes mountains, deserts and steppes. A significant portion of the population still lives a nomadic lifestyle, herding livestock such as sheep, goats, camels and yaks. The traditional dwelling they use is called a ‘ger’ or ‘yurt’. The Gobi Desert, one of the largest deserts in Asia, covers a large part of Mongolia. It is known for its extreme temperature fluctuations and unique wildlife. Horses have a special place in Mongolian culture and history. Mongolia was once the heart of the Mongolian Empire, founded by Genghis Khan in the early 13th century. At its peak, the empire was the largest contiguous empire in history. The predominant religion in Mongolia is Tibetan Buddhism, but many Mongolians also practice shamanism, which is deeply rooted in their culture and traditions.
Marek’s journey began in 2012. “We knew about Luaz, and so later during the expedition the catchphrase “BUT LUAZ” was coined. As soon as we returned home, we travelled to Ukraine where we bought one of these vehicles and so began the story of the first amphibious expedition. Marek Slobodnik wanted to stay true to motorcycles, so he searched for one that wouldn’t sink on the water and heard about the Honda ATC 200. It’s been an incredible 11 years of endless preparations and bureaucratic hassles from the purchase of the first Luaz to the launch in 2024. Just like the preparations, the journey hasn’t been easy…
Come hear the story of how they made it all the way to far away Mongolia with their amphibious vehicles. From Europe across Asia via Turkmenistan. Learn why they crossed the border into Uzbekistan on a rope. Why the Honda ATC stopped production and why no one has ever been on one.
We’ll talk about what it looks like right now in Russia and what they were asked at the border. You’ll see the incredible beauty of the Altai Mountains. You’ll see not only how they rode the vehicles, but also how they drowned. How they were speechless at the endless beauty of the Mongolian plains.
