1. OPENING CONCERT 48. Guitar Festival J. K. Mertz Bratislava

The opening concert of the festival will belong to the phenomenal Spanish guitarist Ricardo Gallén, who will present his solo recital in the beautiful and acoustically appealing Mirror Hall of the Primate’s Palace. It will also feature music by Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, who described the level of his extraordinary mastery with the words, “Immense creativity and virtuosity that can be felt just by looking at his hands.”

🇪🇸 RICARDO GALLÉN is an outstanding guitarist with an ever-developing career. His inspiring and innovative interpretations place him among the top musicians, his revolutionary and influential playing and teaching are the best proof of his quality. His rare combination of virtuosity and musicianship has captivated audiences around the world in solo recitals, duets, or with orchestras in major concert halls such as the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the National Auditorium in Madrid, Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, Auer Hall at Indiana University, and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Ricardo has won numerous awards at major music competitions and has held several teaching positions. In 2009 he had the honour of becoming one of the youngest musicians to receive a professorship at the prestigious Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar, Germany, a position he still holds today.

2.  TANGO-DEL-SUBURBIO

Giampaolo BANDINI guitar & Cesare CHIACCHIARETTA bandoneon. .The unconventional combination of guitar and bandoneon will undoubtedly be an extremely attractive evening of the festival. The programme of Argentinian and Cuban music will be presented by the best duo of its kind in the world today, Bandini – Chiacchiaretta. These Italian artists are particularly famous for their interpretation of the music of Astor Piazzolla, whose music will dominate the concert. In addition, however, the duo will perform the magnetic composition Folia a través de los siglos by Leo Brouwer, dedicated to them, as well as the European premiere of the brand new Sonata del suburbio by the Argentinian Maximo Diego Pujol.

🎶 A quiet and immersion into the poetic art of early romanticism will be a song evening on Thursday 27. June performed by the phenomenal soprano Simona Šaturová. Songs by Franz Schubert, including Im Frühling, Wanderer’s Nachtlied and Die Forelle, will be performed in the Concert Hall of the Clariska with guitar accompaniment by Martin Krajč and interspersed with miniatures from Joseph Kaspar Mertz’s Bardenklänge. The ear-pleasing music will be complemented by poetry of romantic poets recited by Štefan Buček.

4. Yamandu COSTA

A unique guitarist, a unique program and an extraordinary space characterize the concert that will be the culmination of the festival week. Yamandu Costa represents the best that Brazilian music has to offer today and, according to professional critics, is an artist who “seems not even to be from this planet”. His playing is a confluence of virtuosity, extraordinary energy, traditional Brazilian folkloric forms and contemporary jazz influences. In the enchanting space of the Ponton, overlooking the historic city directly from the Danube River, this will be his first performance in Slovakia.

The concert is held with the financial support of the Embassy of Brazil and under the auspices of the Guimarães Rosa Institute in Bratislava.
