Rusalka is the story of a water fairy who lives with her companions and her father the Waterman in a forest lake. She longs to become human in order to know love. Ježibaba helps her, but on the condition that she remains mute, and if she loses her love, she must return to the lake as a wanderer. In the forest, the Prince gets lost, meets Rusalka and falls in love with her. Rusalka returns his love and goes with him to the castle. After a while, however, the Prince tires of her. The desperate Rusalka confides in the Waterman and he swears revenge. The Prince realises his mistake too late, finds Rusalka in the forest, embraces her and dies in her arms.
Dvořák’s opera is full of dazzling musical beauty and is one of the theatrical works that move audiences around the world. Director Martin Kákoš’s production is a beautiful and engaging fairy tale for the whole family.
