Bernini and Borromini left in Rome the perfect heritage, works of art and masterpieces, known all over the world.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini, also known as Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini, was born in Naples. He worked in the Baroque period, in which he became famous for his perfect works of architecture, sculpture, and painting. Bernini is also one of the most important figures in European art in the 17th century. As one of the few artists of the time, fame was given to him during his lifetime. He was famous among the people and also among the popes. He certainly inherited his talent from his father Pietro Bernini who was also a famous Italian sculptor. The young Bernini was also influenced by the work of Raphael or Michelangelo. His most famous works in Rome include, for example, the Portrait of Pope Urban or his self-portraits, but above all the huge colonnade of St. Peter’s Square, Cathedra Petri in St. Peter’s Basilica, where there is also Bernini’s canopy which is almost 30 meters high. The perfection of his works can also be observed in the sculpture Ecstasy of Saint Teresa.

Francesco Borromini, real name Francesco Castelli, is also one of the most famous Italian architects. Like Bernini, Borromini also dates back to the Baroque period. And after Bernini, he was the second best known Baroque builder. He became famous mainly for the construction of the churches which were characterized by very complex plants. Among his most important works belong the Church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane in Rome, the Church of San Agnese in Agone, the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, and the Church of Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza.
