Today, the name Humboldt stands for a holistic educational ideal, for new scientific insights and an unbiased view of other cultures. But who exactly were the Humboldt brothers? And how were their lives influenced by the contrasts of their time, by the contradiction between the freedom of thought of the Enlightenment and the persisting ignorance of colonialism? The German Historical Museum is investigating this question with a major special exhibition, incidentally it is the first major exhibition on Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt in Germany.
