ONE DAY JAZZ FESTIVAL is coming to Bratislava in July! Jazz is a musical genre with a very rich history, which requires a more refined musical taste.

PROGRAMME:

1. Alan Bartuš Trio feat Gregory Hutchinson (SK/USA)

Place: Church of St. Clare, Bratislava
Date: Monday, July 3, 2023 at 6:00 p.m.

Pianist Alan Bartuš (22) is one of the most distinctive personalities transcending the domestic scene. Despite his age, he has three albums to his credit and a series of awards from international competitions (Excellence Piano Awards, Ö1 Jazzstipendium within JAM MUSIC LAB, ARTEDEA Jazz Competition).

A student of Vienna’s Jam Lab Uni, under the supervision of the outstanding American pianist Danny Grissett, he is going to one of the most prestigious jazz schools – the Manhattan School of Music in New York – in September. Before that, however, he will be able to present his new album Born in Millennium, recently released under the wings of the prestigious German label Double Moon Records, at the 15th ONE DAY JAZZ Festival.

Born in Millennium is the pianist’s follow-up to the Connectivity project, which he recorded in 2021 together with his father, double bassist Štefan Bartuš. The two regularly collaborate with renowned musicians and the legendary American drummer Gregory Hutchinson appears on the current recording, which Bartuš managed to build from his own compositions with one exception.

2. Concert Immanuel Wilkins (USA)

Venue: Old Town Hall, Bratislava
Date: Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at 5 p.m.

Already on 5 July we invite you to the Old Town Hall in Bratislava for a concert of Immanuel Wilkins Quartet (USA) and its masterclass. The program will also include the SJS Summer Jazz Workshop Lecture Concert and Jam Session After Party at Klub JazzTikot .

Immanuel Wilkins Quartet (USA)

How to tell the dramaturgy of a good festival from an exceptional event? An extraordinary event introduces musicians just at the time of their artistic flowering. This is precisely the case of twenty-six-year-old alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, whose albums released on the prestigious Blue Note label have attracted attention on the American scene. The Philadelphia native was influenced by saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Branford Marsalis and Marshall Allen, but it was trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, while studying at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music, who steered him towards the more avant-garde legacy of saxophonist Ornette Coleman. From there, it was a short hop to the more open-minded projects of pianist Jason Moran, who took the skilled saxophonist under his wing. Wilkins’ conception offers the most up-to-date view of the direction of jazz, and the ONE DAY JAZZ festival proudly presents his outstanding quartet in its Slovak premiere.

Venue: Old Town Hall, Bratislava
Date: Sunday, 9 July 2023 at 17:00

We invite you to another jazz evening with One Day Jazz Festival. You can look forward to Waking Vision (USA/SK) and Dennyiah (SK).

Waking Vision (USA/SK)

Waking Vision was founded at the beginning of the millennium by classmates from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Guitarist and composer John Shannon, bassist Mitch Cohn, and drummer Martin Valihora shared a passion for open music that rang with tremendous intensity and a connection to nature. The band released a pair of trio albums (The Ancient Bloom and Into High Selva) and enlisted analog synthesizer player Peter Stolzman for the remarkable and award-winning Of the Waking Vision (Hevhetia 2006). Waking Vision played a series of concerts in several countries and gained many fans. The current member of the trio is New York-based double bassist Peter Slavov, and the line-up is currently working on their fourth album.

John Shannon – guitar
Peter Slavov – double bass
Martin Valihora – drums

Dennyiah (SK)

Dennyiah is a Slovakian multi-genre duo, which is inspired by indie-pop, country, soul and blues. The Košice tandem consists of singer Denisa Denny Gajarská and guitarist Ľuboš Šoltés. The hallmark of the duo is not only Denisa Gajarská’s curly red hair, but above all the intensity of her voice and persuasiveness. The group released their debut album Human Aspect in 2020 and has performed at several domestic events. Their song Kingdom, whose music video was filmed on the coast of Scotland, gained popularity.
